ALPHA OF THE ISSUE: GRETA THUNBERG | A SWEDISH ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST

She gained international prominence for her passionate advocacy on climate change issues.

Greta Thunberg, a Swedish environmental activist, rose to global prominence for her unyielding determination to address climate change. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2003, Greta’s passion ignited at a young age. She founded the Fridays for Future movement, inspiring students worldwide to strike for climate action.

Her solo protests outside the Swedish parliament evolved into a powerful global movement. Greta’s influence, known as “the Greta effect,” challenged world leaders to take immediate steps toward environmental preservation. Her dedication continues to inspire countless individuals to join the fight against the climate crisis.

She’s the voice of a new empowered generation of climate activists. From Sweden, where at the age of 15, she began protesting outside parliament every Friday with a sign that read ‘School Strike for Climate’, the movement gained traction among other people and soon school protests were seen around the world. She has unashamedly held governments to account and refused to be intimidated by patriarchal power plays.

To avoid flying, she sailed by boat from Sweden to North America where she delivered the now iconic line ‘How Dare You?’ in her speech at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit.

She has spoken of the toll her childhood of activism has taken and while she remains committed to the cause she would prefer not to be the singular face of the global climate justice movement. Thunberg is now stressing the importance of listening to local people on local issues.
