Spotify Challenges Apple’s New Transaction Fees
Music streaming giant Spotify has publicly criticized Apple’s newly introduced transaction fees in the US. The tech behemoth recently announced that it would allow app developers to sell products outside its own store, but only if they still paid a commission.
Apple’s decision to levy up to 27% in transaction fees has sparked outrage from Spotify. The music streaming service has called the move “outrageous” and accused Apple of “stopping at nothing” to protect its profits.
The new fees were introduced by Apple following a protracted legal battle with Fortnite developer Epic Games. The court ruled that Apple had violated US competition laws by not allowing app developers to inform users about alternative payment methods, including links that bypass Apple’s own App Store payment system.
In response, Apple has introduced a new set of rules in the US. These rules permit users to subscribe to services without using Apple’s system, but developers will be charged up to a 27% commission.
Spotify has vehemently opposed these policies, stating that they contradict the US court’s attempt to foster greater competition. The company has urged the UK government to prevent similar fees from being implemented in the UK.
This development underscores the ongoing tension between app developers and platform providers. As the digital marketplace continues to evolve, the balance between fostering innovation and ensuring fair competition remains a contentious issue.
