Micron Technology to Partner with Indian Government to Create Semiconductor Ecosystem
Micron Technology, a global leader in semiconductor technology, has confirmed that the first phase of its memory assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat will be operational by early 2025. The company has already begun hiring for the factory and plans to construct the second phase in the second half of the decade. The facility will complement Micron’s assembly sites in Singapore and Hong Kong. The investment for the facility is $2.75 billion and will lead to the creation of 5,000 new Micron jobs and 15,000 community jobs.
The Indian government is supporting the project through a dedicated platform for creating a semiconductor ecosystem in the country. The government’s support will help fund the project and facilitate access to essential semiconductor infrastructure and resources, which will drive innovation and enhance local talent development. Ashwini Vaishnav, Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics and IT, expressed confidence that the first made-in-India memory chip will come from Micron’s plant in 2024. He also requested the company to help set up a Centre of Excellence at IIT Gandhinagar for semiconductor technology, noting that the sector requires continuous research.
Micron’s choice of Gujarat as the location for the facility is due to the strong manufacturing infrastructure in the region. The company is hopeful that this investment will catalyze other investments in the sector, encourage innovation, and support broader job creation. The sector will require a million-plus talent, and with this in mind, the government has tied up with 104 universities and institutions to develop courses for this1.
Micron’s investment in India is a significant step towards the country’s goal of becoming a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing. The facility’s operationalization will create a positive impact on the country’s economy and provide a boost to the semiconductor industry.
